Jeffrey Lyman performs Andrzej Panufnik’s “Concerto for Bassoon and Small Orchestra” (1985) with the Kennesaw State University Symphony Orchestra conducted by Nathaniel Parker. This unusual concerto is a memorial to the Polish Catholic priest Jerzy Popiełuszko who in 1984 was tortured and murdered by members of the Polish Security Service. Rather than act as a virtuoso vehicle for the bassoon soloist, the work instead offers us an opportunity to contemplate the career of Father Popiełuszko, who was an advocate for the Polish people and who dedicated his life opposing the communist regime. The program, titled “Tragedy & Triumph” also includes Brahms’ “Tragic Overture” and Saint-Saëns’ Symphony No. 1 with guest conductor Jacob Harrison.
The concert will be held on Wednesday, September 13, 2023 at 7:30 pm in the Dr. Bobbie Bailey & Family Performance Center, 488 Prillaman Way, Kennesaw, GA 30144. The concert will be livestreamed at this link: Concerts and Events - Arts (kennesaw.edu)
